About

The Iroquois

Where Are We Located?

The home land of the Iroquois is in the noth east, primaraly in New York. The Iroquois migration led them on many journeys covering lands near and far, but the American revolution caused the home land to be taken over. The Iroquois had to surrender their land, and they were pushed back up into Canada where a large percentage remain today.

Food???

An average meal for the Iroquois would include corn, squash, and beans. The women were the farmers, and the men were the hunters. Depending on the success of the crops, and hunting determined their diet.

Relationships?

The Iroquois were not very good with getting along with people outside of their tribe, and often had trouble getting along even within their tribe. Even with a good political system in place, there was still controversy within their tribe, and quite a bit involving the surrounding tribes as well as the French and British.

America's History Land of Liberty

The Iroquois tribes had many chiefs, and their jobs involved mainly millitary, and governmental decisions effecting the tribes.

The Iroquois lived in longhouses. Their houses were typically 100 feet long, give or take depending on your ranking in the tribe. Up to 60 people cound live in one of the longhouses.

Our Culture

Women are ranked very high in our culture. Women own all property, and do most of the coloboration/ decision making within the tribe. Our tribe depends heavily on the success of our crops, and our hunting trips. We believe very strongly in the importance of unity, and loyalty to one another within the tribe in order to succeed in our journies.
